A new client (construction company) of our clinic recently sent in a 19 y/o non-driver for a premployment urine drug test directing us to do a federal (DOT) test. The client told us that all of his employees who perform safety sensitive jobs (CDL drivers, non-CDL drivers, dock workers, anyone loading trucks) have always had federal testing. He said that all non-driver employees with safety sensitive jobs are also included in the pool for random federal testing. He told me that he has been doing this since the early 90's. Don't know if he has been audited. No Hazmat or multiple passenger vehicles. It is my understanding that only CDL drivers (vehicles >26,000 lb) or drivers involved with Hazmat transport or vehicles carrying >15 passengers are required to have regulated federal (DOT) testing and all others have nonregulated (non-DOT) testing. Am I missing something? The client insists he is doing the correct testing.
