I have a prospective employee with history of headaches. Her screen was positive for phenobarbital, but she is only taking tramadol, amitriptyline, frova, hydrocodone, and had a recent Synvisc injection. (I presume she had it with lidocaine or the like.) I can find no references to explain the phenobarb, and have never crossed this before. I know amitriptyline can cause some false positives as can the others, but none seem to cross to the barbiturates class, and there are no references that I can find to phenobarbital. Any thoughts from others?
