Think tape recorder: The drug is deposited in the hair follicle under the scalp as that portion of the hair is being developed and then pushed outward. The band of hair that contains the drug continues to get pushed outward until the hair is cut or until the hair falls off. Thus, cutting one's hair and leaving short strands prior to hair collection will reduce the window of detection.
