If I am not mistaken, CAP certification is a voluntary program (just as JCAHO is?) which may be tied in with Medicare and Medicaid requirements for system quality inspection in order to obtain reimbursement. The CAP sets its own rules and does have a CAP-FUDT (forensic urine drug testing certification). I suggest you start with hospital administration as to why CAP is important to them and then check with CAP for applicability to your (less than clear) situation. I find it hard to believe that CAP applies to any specimen you send out to a SAMHSA or CAP-FUDT lab but may well have implications for any in-house testing you are doing as part of the hospital. Also check out the CAP laboratory website.
