In federally regulated testing, the only acceptable alternative medical explanation for a THC-positive drug test result is use of Marinol by prescription. While there are some states and cities that have decriminalized use of plant marijuana for medical purposes, physicians by and large adhere to the federal approach to reviewing drug test results and downgrade the results only when they are explainable as due to use of Marinol by prescription. On occasion, there have been THC-containing products and concoctions identified in this country that, if used in sufficient quantity, can cause THC-positive drug tests. These include oils with high THC content, snacks containing hemp seeds with high THC content, teas home brewed with marijuana, and marijuana-laced brownies. These products are illegal and the use of these products is often far fetched and never a medical explanation for a positive drug test.
