If split specimens are received and Bottle A is flawed -- leaked during transit, has insufficient volume, or seals are broken or show evidence of tampering -- the laboratory can redesignate Bottle B as Bottle A and analyze it. The laboratory will also redesignated the bottles if it mistakenly opens Bottle B instead of Bottle A. If and when this specimen is reported positive, adulterated, or substitued, and the donor asks that the split specimen be tested, the laboratory informs the MRO that no split is available and the MRO cancels the test.
