Of note, Soma (a non controlled drug), has as it's active metabolite Meprobamate, a Schedule IV controlled substance! In my experience this relationship is little known by many physicians. I was unaware of this relationship until I got involved with my duties as an MRO. I recall many patients who came to my office specifically requesting Soma (often with codeine) for back pain. Soma has abuse potential, but is rarely tested for in workplace drug testing, although there were several test results that I have reviewed that were positive for meprobamate. http://www.biopsychiatry.com/meprobamate.htm is a link that has the abstract of an article that discusses this relationship between Soma and Meprobamate.
