If the first specimen has an out-of-range temperature, a second specimen should be collected under direct observation and (in my opinion) both specimens should be sent to the lab for analysis. I believe this approach parallels the approach from the federal drug testing rules. Also, whenever the specimen's integrity is in doubt, one is going to get better data by using laboratory-based validity testing than by whatever validity tests might be available at the collection site.
