DOT expects MROs to maintain hardcopies of CCF Copy 2 with the MRO's signature in step 6. 49 CFR 40.163 tells the MRO to retain a signed or stamped and dated copy of Copy 2 of the CCF. Implicit is that the MRO should retain the document in hardcopy form, as opposed to signing or stamping it and then scanning it.
