Frequently I am told by a donor that the result of their positive test MUST have been because of the fact that the collector switched my specimen with someone else’s specimen. I then remind the donor that they signed the CCF wherein they stated that in fact what was in the cup was their specimen, and it was sealed in their presence. In the unlikely event that collector AND the donor states that there was a possibility that the specimen may not be that of the donor, I might consider canceling the test, but I do not think this has ever happened. Many MRO’s are not in the position of being a detective. Many MRO’s are far removed from the collection site and cannot, nor have the time, to do a full investigation of the allegations of the donor assertions. Again, in the unlikely event that the collector and the donor both agree that there may have been a mistake then I would consider canceling the test. As it was stated earlier, most of these types of issues are better left to the legal system.
