As Dr. Woodall stated, if you are just reviewing “nonregulated” tests, technically one does not need to be certified. That is unless Texas has it’s own laws that states otherwise. However, having said that, it is now the “norm” to be certified. Virtually all MRO’s these days are certified by a nationally recognized certifying board. I do not know anyone who is seriously doing MRO reviews who is NOT certified. It is just a matter of the risk someone is willing to take when it comes to reviewing “unregulated” test results. Having testified in many, many hearings and court proceedings, and since these reviews can and will be brought into the legal system when a donor challenges the results of the test, I cannot imagine someone who is not certified willing to take this risk. I suggest that the pathologist speak with myself, or someone who does MRO work on a regular basis, and I believe that this individual will then understand that the risks are too costly to even consider this.
