I am an MRO in receipt of a positive urine drug test as follows: cocaine (29,420 ng/mL), amphetamine (1,511 ng/mL), methamphetamine (4,196 ng/mL). The donor tells me that he works with undercover police officers doing drug busts and that he has frequently handled drugs over the past 3 months. Another police officer verifies this. My medical text states that no studies have shown significant blood levels from dermal exposure. I have reported this as a positive, but can you comment on the likelihood that donor may actually be recreationally using these drugs?
This urine drug test was conducted for the donor's main job which is not related to the undercover work I mentioned above. As I wrote above, I have already reported this test as positive to the employer who ordered the test. Am I allowed and am I under some obligation to report the positive to the donor's second employer, i.e., the police department, that the result is positive, even though they were not the ones ordering the test? Would that be a violation of confidentiality?
