I found this in one of the earlier articles I was going through. Also, do I have thiscorrect - SAMSHA REQUIRES all non-negative POCT specimens go to the lab?
We have a few companies that are requesting that we do not send out the non-negatives for lab-based tests. I prefer not to do that but would like something in writing to justify my stand -- so that it's not just because I don't want to do that. We do quite a few POCTs as well and, like Dr. Swotinsky, I do not report unconfirmed positives to clients. We only report definitive negatives. Any borderline test is confirmed by another collector or nurse and then sent off to the lab. We do not do the testing in front of the donor. Instead we fill out the CCF as if we are sending it off to the lab and get all the necessary signatures. We then send the patient away or to the lobby and proceed with the POCT. This way we avoid the possible confrontation with the donor. If negative, we destroy the CCF and discard the specimen. We also make a Xerox copy of the result (believe me, it copies well) signed by the collector and then place it in the chart. This way we don't just have to take the collector's word for it. I hope this help. Thanks!
