Ugh. Self-prescribing of controlled substances is prohibited or discouraged under certain state laws. Consider checking the medical practice law in the state where the doctor resides. One shortcut might be to call and pose the question to the state's medical society. If the state law prohibits self-prescribing, call it a positive.
In Massachusetts, where I practice, the State Medical Board prohibits physicians from benzodiazepines and other prescribed controlled substances in Schedules II through IV for their own use. See http://www.massmedboard.org/regs/pdf/prescribe2.pdf .
