See: "Urine pH: the Effects of Time and Temperature after Collection" in JAT Oct 2007. It suggests that urine stored at or above room temperature can develop a pH between 9.0 and 9.5. We see most of our mildly elevated (pH 9.0-9.3 levels are what I usually see) in the hotter time of the year. Samples are not refrigerated and courier flights might take the samples to warmer climates and hot warehouses en route. Often when I see these I also note that it has taken several days for the sample to arrive at the lab. With that said, though, I see a lot of samples that took just as much time and with likely the same temperature exposures that do NOT have pH problems.
