Our practice is known around town for doing drug screens and we occasionally get drug screens that are unrelated to employment. For example, we may have someone who "wants to know they are clean" before they apply for a job etc. Recently we have been seeing students that may be having problems at school etc, and a parent brings them in for drug testing and pays for the test. Who "owns" those results? Clearly for self-pay in an adult, it stops at the adult. But with someone 18 or younger, should that still be the case? I'm uncomfortable with the legal issue involved especially if the child has behavior issues etc. I'd just as soon not be involved at all but this is a service our practice has chosen to offer? We are in Illinois if this adds anything. I'm interested in other's thoughts.
