Safety concern

When the MRO reports a negative DOT drug test result with a safety concern due to a medication, is it appropriate to give the employer the name of a prescribed drug that may be the safety issue?

The federal drug testing regulations and guidelines do not define what to report or how to report it in federally regulated testing programs. In programs that are not federally regulated, there are likewise no regulations or guidelines that address this topic.

As a matter of good medical practice, it is generally recommended to limit the disclosure of personal health information to those with a need to know. This could mean alerting the employer to a concern, suggesting the donor be seen by a local occupational health provider, and offering to speak directly with that provider to explain the reason for the concern, e.g., the specific medication.
