My name is Dr Gita Dalal. I am a physician at NJTransit.

I needed your opinion, please.

A 26 yrs old DOT Bus Driver fell on the curb and had a craniectomy for traumatic injury with plastic flap.

In between surgeries he had brain infection & was admitted as well but recovered OK.

Now on folic acid with a diagnosis of subdural hematoma. His neurosurgeon cleared him for a bus driver Job.

Kindly guide me whether he can be qualified for CDL & for how long.

Date of injury was July 2018

Thanks,

Dr Dalal

The driver had surgery to drain a subdural hematoma, i.e., to drain blood that had collected between the brain and the dura. To do this, the surgeon had to penetrate the dura.

FMCSA's 2014 Medical Examiner Handbook describes surgical procedures that penetrate the dura as creating a high risk for unprovoked seizures, a risk that does not diminish over time. The Handbook says that individuals who have undergone such surgery should not be considered eligible for certification. See page 164, http://www.occ-doc.net/FMCSA_Medical_Ex ... 4MAR18.pdf.
