Translating for the non-English speaking driver
Translating for the non-English speaking driver
I have a driver that is not able to complete his own history due to Spanish speaking only. It does not indicate on drivers license what language he speaks. He is here for DOT recertification. I know I am not to assess whether he speaks English or not and I am not to disqualify him purely based on not speaking English. But- are we allowed to help him fill out the Driver History portion? He did not bring an interpreter, and my nurse is asking if she can help him, as she is fluent in Spanish. Thank you kindly.

Yes. Your staff are allowed to help the Spanish-speaking driver complete the English-version form. The regulations and guidelines do not preclude them from doing so. I've worked in various clinics over the years and what you are describing has been standard practice in those clinics.
