Medical marijuana

Anyone suggest or have organizational/hospital policies for employees who are on medical marijuana?

We did come across a couple of pre-employment physicals who were on medical marijuana. We spoke with legal and HR, and deciding case by case basis (no to a safety-sensitive job). Expecting more in the future and planning to implement policies.

The 2015 ACOEM Marijuana in the Workplace paper https://www.acoem.org/uploadedFiles/Pub ... 202015.pdf recommends that employers not allow on-the-job marijuana use by safety-sensitive workers and suggests a 5 ng/mL THC blood test result as evidence of impairment. Canada's occ med society recently published position paper recommending no marijuana use within 24 hours before doing safety-sensitive work. So, there is support for safety-sensitive workers not using marijuana shortly before or while at work. But, that should be obvious, as are the difficulties in enforcing this policy.

I don't have much more to offer on this. While many occ med doctors find it problematic, society as a whole seems to be embracing marijuana. Perhaps we will soon see marijuana smoking rooms next to lactation rooms. Ironically, some of the greatest support comes from the same states that have made pariahs out of tobacco cigarette smokers. (Perhaps unaware that per DSM-V, tobacco dependence is a psychiatric disorder.) I'm aware of health care systems that won't hire people who test positive for cotinine (nicotine metabolite) but ignore marijuana-positive drug test results.

Thanks for your reply! I did read that article recently, and sent it to HR and legal. Unfortunately, enforcing blood levels is a problem as that is perceived as invasive test. But the organizations with safety sensitive positions need to bring the blood test for Marijuana, as the urine marijuana level do not go with current impairment. It will be a learning curve for all.
