Occasionally, an examinee may present for pre placement exam(not on the clock) with the odor of alcohol as well as other clinical findings that makes you suspicious of some degree of alcohol intoxication. A BAT is usually not part of many pre placement examinations. What would you suggest if safe transportation is not an issue and the examinee is still able to answer questions appropriately? Would you contact the company DER/HR to see if a BAT would be appropriate ?

Sounds like a good question to ask them how they want it handled from this point forward. Would you charge them for BATs? What if they tell you not to do the BAT? Would it because they don't want to pay for it? Now you risk passing drunks as fit for duty and put yourself at risk for the sake of a nominal fee. If you don't charge for it and they don't want it, then there is no risk to you when sending them drunks. Document the communication.
