Anticoagulation guidelines for Factor Xa inhibitors

Post by lrowe » Thu Dec 06, 2018 4:24 pm

Are there any guidelines recommending a waiting period when a driver is started on a Factor Xa inhibitor such as Xarelto or Eliquis? At least a one month waiting period is recommended after Coumadin is first started. I realize that it depends on the diagnosis. For example, a driver with new onset A-fib, S/P ablation procedure, started on Xarelto and cleared by cardiologist to drive.

There is no guideline on Factor Xa inhibitors. As noted, it depends on the diagnosis to some extent. For example, DOT's Medical Expert Panel in 2007 recommended that a driver maintain treatment after acute DVT with coumadin for at least 3 and preferably at least 6 months following resolution, and advises that the driver not return until he/she is adequately treated for the DVT and at least a month has gone by.
